about

Hunt (3) Chanterelles by Tina Pearson (2012- 2013)

The Hunt series is a set of compositions by Tina Pearson that reside in the sensations and attention states of hunting and gathering. Hunt (3) explores the experience of hunting for chanterelle mushrooms. While it draws on the composer’s recent mushroom hunting excursions near the Salish Sea, it more deeply reflects the memories of her mother, Lillian Grygorcewicz, who learned to gather chanterelles and other wild foods as a young child in the forests of what was then Eastern Poland. Lillian continued this ancestral practice as a teenaged World War II refugee in West Germany, and then as a displaced person after she relocated to the pine and birch forests of Northwestern Ontario. Considering this migration of experience, the composition seeks an intrinsic aura or a scent, an instinctual knowledge or biospheric connection with mushroom hunting across time, place, and context. The composition moves through a series of movements (Distant- Near, Moss, Needle, Wait, Rain, Wander, Breath, Root, Cap), each with instructions that invite the performers to engage in a specific focus of listening, imagining, and interrelating.
